Mayan contest Empty
PostSubject: Mayan contest   Mayan contest Icon_minitimeThu Apr 16, 2009 10:06 am

Hi,
I proposed a contest here and since a few people wanted to compete in it, let's get this thing started. Smile

I went over the old rules, modifying them a bit. Here are the new rules now.

  • Every building and asset provided in the mapping template has to be used somewhere in the map
  • I will provide a map-file with a huge subtracted cube in it, in which my assets and a few recommended ones from the game are placed. You can then build your map in the same map-file somewhere outside this cube and simply select and duplicate the assets in there and move them over to your map area. Some of the assets I provide aren't StaticMeshes and I find this method easier to work with than using prefabs, especially if you want to modify the assets before you use them.
I will also post a screenshot of the top-view of this cube with little annotations of what are recommended assets from the game, assets you must use somewhere in the map and assets which are optional.
  • You may modify existing assets but they have to remain clearly identifyable
  • You may modify the provided assets any way you please.
  • You may add as many of your own assets as you like, but the level has to be based on the provided assets regardless. Ie, you can add five of your own pyramids to mine but you may not make a space-ship map and just have my assets in an Unreal-2-like hologram in a room somewhere.
  • You may add as many of your own assets as you like, but they should roughly fit the Mayan theme. (this rule change should make clear that the map does not have to look like "a map based on Murphy's stuff" but like "a map based on Mayan-looking stuff")
  • The terrain and with it the whole surrounding environment has to be earth-based. It does not have to be a rendition of a real place or look photorealistic, but it should not have huge glowing mushrooms or 25 foot tall crystal shards, etc. Gimmicks such as an alien-ship visiting the Mayans based on the pseudo-scientific theory that the Mayans got their technology from extraterrestrials are allowed, but they should remain just that: Gimmicks!
  • To ensure a maximum of variety between maps which are all more or less based on the same template of assets, you will have to post a time of day in here! This time and the lighting conditions people associate with it are reserved for you then. Other contestants have to pick a different time then. Examples: Late dusk/ early dawn; early dusk/ late dawn; noon; rainy afternoon; night
  • As opposed to the Mayan ball-game, the winner of this contest will NOT be beheaded...

The contest starts once three of our contestants posted here, based on the form below and during the first two weeks I will take requests for a total of 4 more models of things (not 4 models per contestant! First come first serve!). New contestants can join at any time during the running contest but I won't be taking requests after the first two weeks.

The contest will run for one month!

More details, such as a posting format for the finished maps, will be posted in here while the contest runs.

As this contest (like the whole forum) is primarily aimed at newbies, feel free to join even if you are a real rookie to UnrealEd. If you have any question, the forum is open for you and you can even request tutorials!

The jury will consist of me (Murphy) and I will take your estimated skill-level into account. This isn't to say that the better map doesn't have a better chance to win, but it means I will try to be as fair as possible to give newbies the same chance as more advanced contestants. I will write a detailed review for every submitted map to make the scoring as transparent as possible and everyone will have three days after the last review is posted to express their opinion.

--------------------------
If you want to compete in this contest, please post a message based on the following form in here:
--------------------------
Name:
(only important if you want to be referred to with a name other than your account-name)
Lighting conditions for my map:
(Examples: Late dusk/ early dawn; early dusk/ late dawn; noon; rainy afternoon; night)
Gametype:
(Examples: vCTF; ONS)
Roughly estimated skill-level:
(Examples: "new to mapping"; "new to UnrealEd but have used other 3d SDKs before"; "I know my way around in UnrealEd")

This effectively means I got it sitting here waiting for the contest to start.Smile
I won't post it here before it starts so people don't get a head-start. Please sign up using the form in the opening post. Reserving your lighting conditions is the most important thing about it, really. Laughing

Screw it, if we wait for a third contestant to join up we'll be old and grey before anything gets done.
Lets just start now. If anybody still wants to join he/she can still do so.

The file you need is here.

Post your contest related WIP screenshots here.

Good luck!

Might take me a little longer, as i'm working on a mod right now. I'll still make it, but can't dedicate as much time to it. Good luck Stocko! May the best flaming, reincarnating bird win! (lol jk, good luck to you too!)

Drew up a plan for it (MS-Paint style Very Happy), setup my little Skybox for it, started work on the terrain and placement of buildings, also trying out some new game physics (trying to make a zip-line of sorts) that might join the map. Also thinking of adding a sniper turret which might be nice Very Happy

Ok, what's up?
I let it run for 150% of the alotted time now because so far only the Phoenix provided screenshots of his progress. What do you say? Two more weeks?

There was a time limit on this? Didn't realize Murph, just been so busy lately. I'll try to get some more done and get it to a playable state

Seems to me like you are the only one left working on this, so take your time. If you release something at all you win this, as it seems and I'd rather see go at it at your pace and release something you are comfortable with than rush it out because of an artificial time-limit which doesn't have any real meaning anymore.

I'd still love to see more WIP shots as you go along. Smile
