is it possible to assaign a different texture or skin to a static mesh? this would save me having to make a new mesh for each of its alternate skins.

Hope you can help, thanks !

Go to the properties of an already placed StaticMesh -> Display -> Skin -> Add -> Use. The currently selected Texture will replace the first material of the StaticMesh then. If that wasn't the one you wanted to replace, click Clear and add another skin and try to use your texture for that one. Do that until you hit the right one.
